The River Ring masterplan for Williamsburg’s waterfront project has been approved by the New York City Council after more than two years worth of discussions with residents, stakeholders, entrepreneurs and others. Two Trees Management’s revised proposal includes 150 more units of affordable senior housing and an environmental benefits fund. It also features a dedicated YMCA space that “to enhance connectivity of the public waterfront and restore natural habitats, raise the standard of urban waterfront resiliency and transform how New Yorkers interacts with the East River.”
The River Ring Plan includes approximately 3 acres public open space and 3 acres protected in-water access. This masterplan, along with Domino Park, provides more than 8 acres beyond the required amount accessible waterfront public land along the East River waterfront in Williamsburg. Two mixed-income, gently sloping residential buildings were built on the site by BIG. They are situated around an open space created by Field Operations. The community and public spaces of the project offer a protected beach for residents and an in-water area for residents to enjoy a variety of aquatic activities.
The mixed-use development will include 1,050 additional units and 263 residential units for residents of low- and middle-income New York. It will also be anchored by a North Brooklyn waterfront park. The waterfront will be surrounded by a 3-acre park and 3 additional acres for recreational activities, including kayaking, marine ecology, tidal wetlands, and access to the beach. To maintain hundreds of properties on the upland, the infrastructure will be subject to a $100 million investment.
The community will benefit from a 50,000-square-foot YMCA building, as well as 2,000 construction jobs and 500 permanent positions with subsidized training and local hiring. The project will include all-electric buildings as well as a wastewater treatment plant.
